Teenage Depression

Many may be aware that many teenagers experience depressive symptoms – oftentimes leading to suicidal behaviors that could have been prevented with proper treatment. It is important to monitor symptoms in order to catch depression early on and to provide the resources needed to recover.

Depression can be caused by a variety of factors. For example, experienceing traumatic events (such as sexual abuse), a sudden traumatic event (such as the passing of a family member), bullying, and non-accepting family and peers can be detrimental to an adolescent’s mental health. Additionally, conditions such as bipolar disorder also have the potential to cause depression.

Symptoms of depression vary but are oftentimes associated with changes in behavior and attitude. Irritated or annoyed mood, and loss of energy are just a few examples of depressive symptoms. It may be difficult to determine if a change in behavior is associated with the normal challenges in life or if it actually is a sign of depression, thus, it is important to talk with the teenager in order to make this determination and commence treatments.

If suicidal thoughts start to occur, it is crucial to seek medical help. Suicide attempts are extremely dangerous and emergency medical help must be sought after in this scenario. The best way to cure depression is to prevent it – teenagers should find a way to manage their stress through different means of relaxation. Spending time outdoors or reaching out to friends and family are effective ways of coping with depressed feelings. If you know someone who you may think is struggling with depression, say something and make sure you take the steps to support them before it is too late.
